Orchestra da Camera Italiana - OCI

In 1996, ten years after offering several highly selective courses at the Walter Stauffer Academy in Cremona with Bruno Giuranna, Rocco Filippini and Franco Petracchi, Salvatore Accardo created a string orchestra with the best students and alumni of the Academy.

Orchestra da Camera Italiana – OCI is an ensemble whose members are all from the same school, with the same expressiveness, technique, and style.

OCI has been created also to offer young, talented musicians an opportunity to work at an high level using the didactic experience and artistic development encouraged at the Academy.

Since his beginning the Orchestra has been continuing the Italian tradition of musical excellence. Taking in mind that love of music is growing wherever there is an opportunity to participate, learn and understand it, the musicians present and foster different kind of musical experience and dialogue to the public.  Under the baton of Salvatore Accardo, the orchestra performs for every kind of audience, from the most sophisticated to the one who has little experience or possibility of training in classical music. The orchestra is also proposing special programs for young people, featuring listening guides and concert talks to illustrate the different parts and characteristics of the orchestra and the performance.

OCI performed its first tour in 1997 and in 1998 debuted to great acclaim at the Schleswig-Holstein Festival in Germany. Afterwards OCI toured South America ( Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay) , receiving the 1999 award for Best Foreign Chamber Ensemble from the Association of Argentinian Music Critics. OCI also participated in the Parma Verdi Festival and the Menton and Verbier Festivals.

OCI has toured Asia in 2000 – Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Taegu, and Hanoi – and since then did many concerts in Italy,  France (the Champs-Elysées Theater and the Cité de la Musique in Paris), USA (Lincoln Center in New York), Germany , Turkey , Albany, etc.

OCI has recorded with Warner Fonit, EMI Classics, and Foné Records. The Virtuoso Violin in Italy, and Masterpieces for Violin and Strings (1997) were recorded with Warner Fonit, The Complete Works for Violin and Orchestra by Paganini with EMI Classics, and with Foné: a recording of the Concert for the Constitution (1997), including also the National Italian Anthem orchestrated for violin and strings by Franco Tamponi, and The Concertos of Palazzo Madama .

The orchestra also released three “Super audio CDs” with Foné:  The Complete Works for Violin by Astor Piazzolla with violinistic review by Salvatore Accardo and orchestration by Francesco Fiore,  Vivaldi’s Four Seasons , and the Vesuvio Concerto for the donation of a Stradivarius's violin to the city of Cremona .
